You know it’s going to be a great session when you get smiles from a toddler in the first 5 minutes! The “T” family session was easy breezy. Spencer was already such a good big brother to baby Aiden and their interactions were my favorite! I always send some tips and tricks to clients ahead of their session but this family really nailed it! Here are 4 tips for beautiful photos taken in your natural environment - AT HOME!
Light. Let there be [natural] light! Not every home has bright and airy spaces, but every home has at least a few windows! Take a look around your house during the day to see where the most natural light comes in and that’s probably where we’ll be for photos! Turning on overhead lights or lamps may seem like it brightens a space, but it also creates a mixed lighting situation which can’t really be fixed by editing. So the best bet is to stick to the available natural light! Neutral or white walls are best, too.
Limiting distractions. Declutter the space(s) you’ve determined have great light. Removing toys, picture frames, and other knick knacks can go a long way to creating images that are clean and free of distractions. I can also help rearrange things if need be!
Outfits. I have written a whole blog post about outfit choices, but particularly for in-home sessions, why not go with what you would typically wear at home on the weekends?? Okay, maybe you want to put on some real pants instead of leggings (I wouldn’t judge either way!!) but the point is, you should be comfortable and as confident as you can be. This is all about capturing you naturally existing in your element, at home.
Attitudes. Last but NOT least, your attitudes are everything. The last thing I want you to feel is stressed during our photo shoot! Hopefully having a session at home eliminates some of the stress of getting everyone dressed and out the door, making sure to pack back-up snacks and all that. But if you have specific concerns, let’s chat about them ahead of time so you can come into the session feeling at ease. If the kids aren’t cooperating, try to relax and trust that I will still be able to get great photos!
